(1/15/2018) Garuda Indonesia has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet aircraft.
The plane arrived in Jakarta from Boeing Corporation in Seattle on December 26, 2017, and went into active service with the dawning of the New Year.
Quoted by Kompas.com, the CEO of Garuda, Pahala N Mansury, said, “This is our first delivery of a Boeing 737 MAX 8 and it went into operation on January 1, 2018 flying between Jakarta and Surabaya.”
Mansury praised the state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX 8’s use of the CFM International LEAP-1B engine that has demonstrated itself to be more operationally efficient than its predecessors. The new aircraft also boasts a number of design and airframe changes that enhance its aerodynamic performance.
“Indeed, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 is up to 30% more efficient in its use of fuel when compared with the Boeing 737 NG and has a flight range of up to 7 hours,” explained Pahala.
The new Boeing 737 MAX 8 is the first of 50 aircraft of its type ordered by Garuda Indonesia and heralds plans by the Indonesian national carrier to gradually replace its current fleet of leased Boeing 737-800 NG planes on short and medium haul regional routes.
The 7-hour flight range for the new aircraft allows point-to-point destinations at a distance of 6,500 kilometers.
Also unique to the new aircraft is its used of the Scimitar Winglet wing design. Intended to reduce the effects of turbulence. The wing splits into two sections at its outermost tip with one part of the wing pointing skyward and the other towards the ground.
The Boeing 737-MAX 8 is configured to carry 170 passengers divided into two classes of 8 business class seats and 162 economy seats.
