President Jokowi Urges Airport Expansion Trunojoyo

JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) again asked government officials to complete connectivity with the acceleration of infrastructure development, from roads, bridges, ports, to airports.

It appreciates the Ministry of Transportation which has extended the runway of Trunojoyo Airport from 1,100 meters to 1,600 meters, so ATR-class commercial aircraft has been able to land since last week.

However, he asked the Minister of Transportation that Trunojoyo Airport can be used by larger aircraft. This was conveyed by the President considering Madura Island with 4 million inhabitants have economic potential and high mobility traveling to various destinations.

“It needs to be extended again in order to use larger aircraft,” said the President.

Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said that it is necessary to extend the runway from the current 1,600 meters and 30 meters wide to 2,250 meters and 45 meters wide to be used by jet aircraft. In order to accommodate prospective passengers and passengers who come required the development of terminal area.

“But the extension of this terminal can not be solved at once, but through phasing. Phase 1 of 800 square meters, phase 2 of 1,160 square meters and stage 3 of 2,139 square meters, “said Budi.

The runway extension and terminal expansion will be completed by 2019.
