Religious, Military and Political Leaders Issue Guidelines for ‘Nyepi’ Observances on Saturday, March 17, 2018

(3/9/2018) In a circular order signed on February 15th by religious leaders from across the Island of Bali, police and military authorities, the Provincial office for the Ministry of Religion, and Governor Made Mangku Pastika – all Bali residents have been reminded that:

  • Hindus in Bali will celebrate the New Year (Caka 1940) with the official “day of silence – Nyepi” and the religious mandated Catur Bratha Penyepian on Saturday, March 17, 2018, that stipulates: Amati gni – no open fires or flames; Amati lelanguan – no pleasurable activities; Amati karya – no work or labor; and Amati Lelungan – no journeys.
  • Non Hindus residing in Bali must respect and honor the purity of “Hari Nyepi” by not venturing forth from their homes for the 24 hours from 6:00 am on Saturday, March 17th until 6:00 am the following morning.
  • Radio, television and cable/satellite broadcasts will not be available during the 24 hours of silence.
  • Cellular and Internet providers are requested to turn off their connections during the 24-hour period of silence.
  • Fireworks, amplified sound and noisemakers are not allowed during the Nyepi period.
  • Hotel are instructed not to host Nyepi-related entertainment programs or other forms of entertainment/amusement in promoting occupancy over the period of silence.
  • Local religious and community watch groups are expected to ensure that the protocols of Nyepi are honored in coordination with police officials.
  • All religious groups in Bali are urged to familiarize their followers with these guidelines and seek their compliance.
